Island Brac, Croatia
Supetar
Supetar is the only village on the island with a status of a capital. It owes its name to its protector - Saint Peter. It was founded during the roman period but then stagnated for centuries to be established again in 19th century as a capital and a connection with the mainland. While entering the Supetar port one can see a lovely peninsula of St.Nicolas with the remains of a villa rustica from Antique period.
Two old-Christian sarcophagi were found there; the reason for building a cemetery and a magnificent marble mausoleum of family Petrinovic. If you want to get to know this lovely place then you need to explore it by walk from the port to the parochial church that dominates the place, then up to Ratac –an area with many pebbly beaches and entertainment facilities.
Supetar showed its urban traits very early as well as cosmopolitan orientation by founding the first public beach already in 1909! Generally, it is quite a peaceful place to live in, but in summer, it becomes the center of numerous cultural manifestations, especially during the season and St. Peter's day, protector of Supetar.
