Island Brac, Croatia

Getting to Brac and away

Getting to Brac island is fairly easy. Island Brac is only 7 nautical miles far from Split which is the biggest town in Dalmatia. Brac has regular ferry and catamaran lines from Split, Makarska and Jelsa (on Hvar island). Ferry lines lead you to Supetar and Sumartin (from Makarska), while catamaran lines go to Bol (from Split and Jelsa, Hvar) and Milna.

During the summer there is a number of excursion boats, quick boats also connecting Brac to mainland and neighbouring islands, but for these the best place to ask for schedule and prices is at your primary destination.

There is also an option of flying to Brac, regular flights operate only from capital of Croatia, Zagreb.

Car ferry lines to Brac island

If you travel by car, the only way to reach Brac is by ferry. They leave from Split to Supetar, and from Makarska to Sumartin, on the island's eastern tip.

Catamaran lines to Brac island

Catamaran tickets can only be purchased on the day of travel, so expect long queues during the summer and purchase early since there is only one trip per day and it quickly gets sold out. If the weather is exceptionally bad on a certain day, then the catamarans don't go at all.

Usually you can also take your dog on a catamaran, but be aware that during the trip the dogs are kept in the box, on the deck (outside), so if you're uncomfortable with this, take the ferry.

The catamarans usually leave Split from dock next to the Diocletian's palace but this can change so make an inquiry while purchasing the ticket.

Air connections to Brac island

Brac_airportBrac island airport is located only 14 km from Bol and 30 km from Supetar. Most of it's traffic is generated via charter operators, but there is a regular line from beginning of May, till middle of October from Croatia's capital, Zagreb. This line operates each Saturday, and the price is from 30€ up, one way. The ticket can be bought online at Croatia airlines website

The departure time from Zagreb to Brac airport is 10:40 am, while the plane from Brac airport to Zagreb leaves at 18:45. The flight duration is 50 minutes.

Because this line is not frequent, the best way to reach island Brac by air is to fly to Split and then take the ferry or catamaran to Brac.

Tips for ticket purchasing in port of Split

Split_port_ticket_office_locations

Tickets can be purchased at the port of Split, either at the Jadrolinija (ferry & catamaran operator) main building (recommended especially during the summer since it has air-conditioning and queues clear off more quickly) or at the ticket kiosks located along the coastal line of the Split port.

The white hand marks the first ticket kiosk location, while the red hand marks Jadrolinija main building location, the mouse cursor points to the place where catamarans usually start their trip.

To reach Jadrolinija main building (near where the ferries usually start their trip) just follow the signs for ferry port, the ticket kiosks are located along the way, first is right next to the Diocletian's palace and near to where the catamarans usually start their trip.

If you travel by car, you should go to the main building, since you can leave the car in the queue for Supetar (ask the guy at the ramp where to leave the car - you must pass the ramp before entering the queue) and then leave the car to purchase the tickets.

If you want to go with catamaran, then the first ticket kiosk is usually the best place to purchase tickets. Unfortunately, during the summer there can be long queues, and it can be more tiring to wait under the hot sun then to go to the main building, buy the ticket in air-conditioned area and get back to the catamaran.

It is 15 minutes walk to the main building and back to the first kiosk location plus time you'll need to purchase the ticket. This can be important if you want to browse the Diocletian's palace or if you are travelling with catamaran.

Tips overview:

  • Jadrolinija main building is air-conditioned, consider purchasing your ticket there
  • If you travel by car to Supetar, purchase the ticket at the main building, upon leaving your car in queue
  • Tickets for catamarans can be purchased only on the day of departure
  • Purchase as early as possible your catamaran ticket - catamaran can be sold out for the day
  • If the weather is exceptionally bad, catamarans don't travel, only ferries
  • Check for the exact place where the catamarans start when purchasing tickets
